Security Tip of the Day

New Fraud Update as of Aug. 21, 2018

We have heard isolated reports from member-owners who have received a phone call that appears to be from American Airlines Federal Credit Union – with our main number (800) 533-0035 as the caller ID – advising them of suspicious activity on their account.

The Credit Union does have proactive fraud-monitoring programs in place for both our credit and debit card products and we will attempt to contact you when suspicious activity is identified. However, these services will not ask you to provide sensitive data such as:

  1. Your full card number
  2. Security code on the back of the card

If you receive a phone call, even if it appears to be from us, and someone asks for sensitive information like this, you should proceed with caution.

Scammers have the ability to "spoof" the phone number of the caller so that it appears to originate from a trusted institution, so always be on your guard. If you receive a call of this nature, you should hang up and not provide any of the information requested.

If you are ever in doubt, you can always call us directly at (800) 533-0035 for assistance and we can confirm if there is anything on your account requiring your immediate attention.

Additional Common Fraud Schemes

Here are some helpful tips and advice on other modern fraud schemes in which we’ve seen a recent surge. Watch for these tell-tale warning signs that an unsolicited text, phone call or email might be a potential scam. Beware if it asks you to:

  • Provide assistance in accessing funds held in a foreign country by paying taxes or other fees
  • Pay fees for a loan or to boost your credit rating before you are granted a loan
  • Access your account online or make deposits to your account
  • Return an overpayment for an agreed-upon amount for merchandise to them or another party
  • Give your Visa® debit card and PIN to someone in order to be paid for a job
  • Send funds out via Western Union or MoneyGram®, as part of a job assignment, after you are sent checks and instructed to deposit them to your account
  • Withdraw cash from your account and deposit the cash at another financial institution, after you are sent checks and have deposited them to your account
  • Send merchandise out or money via MoneyGram or Western Union as part of a mystery shopping job
  • Purchase prepaid cards or prepaid phones as part of a mystery shopping job

These scenarios only begin to give you an idea of the numerous fraud scams that exist, so if you have any questions about a transaction, please contact the Credit Union at (800) 533-0035 and ask to speak to the Fraud Department for assistance.
