Security Tip of the Day

SMS Phishing | “Smishing”

SMS or Short Message Service is the technology that makes text messages on cell phones possible. SMS phishing or “smishing” is a social engineering technique which attempts to get your personal information such as passwords, usernames or credit card details by sending you a text masquerading as your credit union, credit card company or other institution.

A smishing message may read similar to this example:

“Notice — this is an automated message from (a credit union, bank or financial institution), your ATM card has been suspended. To reactivate call 866-###-####.”
Note the sense of urgency in “your ATM card has been suspended”. This is a technique designed to illicit an emotional response and get you to follow the instructions without question.

If any of your banking, credit card or other financial services providers appear to have sent messages like this:

  • Call the institution directly (find the phone number through an independent source) and inquire.
  • Never respond to or follow the instructions, links, etc. in any of these messages.

American Airlines Federal Credit Union will never send you a text message or an email asking for your authentication credentials.
